This is a comedy thriller in which almost every annoying film trope on the list - from the Lovable Sociopath character to the trash-talking dodgy minorities to the shrill woman who"s actually got a point to the constant shaky close-ups - is used to maximum effect. They even wheel out the family, holiday and sports movie cliches for a skewing at one point. But as natural progressions in the story, these scenes are as satisfying as any in the best of those movies.
Sandler"s Howie is a selfish man with a serious problem that effects everyone in his manic orbit, most of whom are locked into it by personal or financial relationships. For me, it worked all the way through, with the exception of one character that really just needs to be there for the story to progress. There"s a great darkly funny exchange, after it"s established that his personal life is an escalating disaster, where a pawn broker shows genuine concern for Howie"s health. It should be a touching moment, but just underneath is the fact that this is one of the few people that will always benefit from Howie"s high-risk scams.
All the performances are believable. There are cameos that I didn"t know about, but I didn"t know the people anyway, so I can at least say I enjoyed them for what they were in the story. Keith William Richards stands out as another trope-tackling element and both the leading ladies - Fox and Menzel - do well with thankless and/or confusing roles.
I like this type of low-action thriller. I think this is a very good addition that I"ll definitely watch again.

Great video dude, this was great. I cant wait for Uncut Gems. Since Good Time Ive been dying to see what the Safdie Brothers come out with next, and Adam Sandler looks great in it. Maybe it"s because I feel bad for Howard and wish he won and turned it all around. Maybe it"s because I"m watching that scumbag kill him, his cousin, and get away with everything we"ve seen Howard stressed to earn and hold onto. Maybe it"s because we can infer that Howie"s girlfriend will be followed by the goons, maybe killed, and robbed of the money. It"s all just chaos, and death is perhaps a bittersweet release for a fast-talking, gambling addict like Howard. Your insight helps me make sense of it all, within all the film"s chaos. The only thing I didn"t like wax the eighties music. I didn"t think that fit into the movie at all. Even though the colors in the inner gem scope shots were kind of eighties colored and pixelated, I don"t think it fit. They should"ve used 2012 music since the movie took place in 2012. Also the use of eighties music will date this film when this current craze for all things eighties goes out of style. He mentions Cliffs, how ironic is that? RIP legend. Does. This felt like one minute... Csiszolatlan gyémánt netflix. Say what you will about modern horror but there are some innovative films coming out amongst the trash. First a nearly silent film with A Quiet Place and now a modern black and white film. Those are some risky choices to make when you could just turn a profit with some generic crap.
